Stevia research

Nutrition and health

As sugar consumption increases globally and more and more regulatory agencies and public health organizations issue calls to reduce added sugar in diets, the role of stevia as a healthy alternative increases. Stevia has been rigorously tested in more than 200 scientific studies, and we continue to explore new research in areas that encourage better health outcomes for people around the world.

Areas of research include:

  • Appetite and weight management
  • Metabolism
  • Blood glucose & diabetes
  • Children
  • Safety & food policy

Taste and ingredients

Stevia is a naturally derived flavor modifier and sweetener that is 250-300 times sweeter than sugar, and contains more than 60 compounds known as steviol glycosides, each with a unique set of sensory and functional properties. We work to help discover new flavors and ways to use stevia, to provide companies and people with healthier, plant-based ways to reduce sugar use and enhance taste.

Areas of research include:

  • Taste of stevia
  • Working with stevia in food and beverage applications
  • Sensory science
  • Stevia taste science
  • Natural flavor modification

Stevia is grown using natural, traditional plant breeding methods such as cross-pollination and other non-genetically modified processes. We continue to support research promoting more sustainable growing methods and improved extraction, as well as stevia’s role in promoting greater biodiversity, and ways it can help support farmers and agricultural communities around the world.

Areas of research include:

  • Stevia farming
  • Extraction & purification
  • Naturality of stevia leaf extract
  • Understanding the leaf
